Jewel was born in Utah but raised in Alaska. Her parents,Atz and Nedra
Kilcher, were both musical. She has two brothers. She has been said to
have learned to play the piano before she learned to read, and age six,
she traveled across Alaska performing with her parents. She also learned
to yodel. When Jewel was eight years old, her parents divorced, and her
mother moved to San Diego, California. Jewel stayed with her father until
graduation, when she moved to San Diego with her mom. They didn't have
much money, and Jewel had to take multiple jobs to earn a living. When
she got fed up with working, her and her mother moved into their van.
Jewel then performed at various coffeehouses, including Innerchange 
and Java Joe's, and spent her days writing peotry.At age nineteen, she 
was discovered while playing at the Innerchange by Atlantic Records.And 
the Innerchange was where she recorded her first Album, 'Pieces of You'.
She now has another album out: Spirit, released in May of 1998. She 
has also written a book of poetry called A Night Without Armor: Poems, 
and a CD called Night Without Armor with the poetry spoken on it.
